England football fans tried their best to shake off the devastating result of tonight’s semi-final after it became clear Croatia were going to face France in the final on Sunday.
Many were sharing their eagerness to forget about the evening’s events with a dose of the addictive reality competition competition Love Island in the minutes before.
Yet it wasn’t long before Scottish presenter Iain decided to bring up the sporting result.
Speaking to viewers amid the typical villa drama on the ITV2 show, the narrator suddenly made a potentially ill-timed joke.
“Congratulations England, I knew you’d do it,” he praised.
But then the host started clearing his throat in preparation for a swift change in tone.
He said sadly: “Commiserations England.
“Better luck next time.”
Clearly enjoying the cheeky joke, the comedian asked: “Editor, can we delete one of those? Otherwise I’m gonna look like an idiot.”
While it’s not clear whether Iain made the reference on purpose, or if he genuinely wanted the editor to amend his comment, viewers were divided.
Taking to Twitter, some fans found the moment hilarious.
One person shared: “Iain Stirling cracks me up #loveisland.”
“Iain Stirling definitely took advantage of that hour delay for that England lol #loveisland,” another wrote.
A third teased: “Iain is so shady #loveisland.”
While a fourth agreed: “Iain Stirling’s comment on England losing is slyyyyy #LoveIsland.”
But some felt the England loss was still too raw as they raged against the personality.
“Too soon Iain, too soon. #loveisland,” one fan warned.
Another slammed: “F**k off Iain Sterling. Scotland can’t even get to a World Cup #LoveIsland.”
“The commentary is just brilliant. It’s still a bit sore Ian #loveisland,” a third viewer gently told him.
Love Island continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV2.
